Many years ago, I came across the article, “Why I raise my children without God.” At first, I thought, “I do not want to read this.” But then I became curious as to why someone, in this day and time, would even attempt to live their life, let alone raise their children, without Christ.

So, I read it. I must admit, if I were in her shoes, as a non-believer, then everything she said would make perfect sense. But since I’m not ~ I found myself wanting to pray for her, in that she would come into the “full knowledge of Christ.” WE as Christians believe that the Bible is the ‘infallible Word of God.” Infallible meaning ~ not erring, incapable of failing, foolproof, reliable and sound. In saying that, God’s Word provides reassurance that serving Him is the ultimate benefit.

After reading the article, I pulled a few of her points (numbered) and searched for scriptures. I also wondered that if she only took the time to get to know God, then just maybe she would have a different perspective on exactly who HE IS.

Here goes:

1. God is a bad parent and role model. We have free will, yet we should be guided.

(However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth. John 16:13 NKJV)

2. Why God, who is “all powerful” allows murders, child abuse, etc.?

(In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John 16:33)

3. God is not fair. Why are children born with heart defects, autism, missing limbs, etc.?

(And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. John 9:2-3)

4. God is not present. We tell our children to love someone they cannot see.

(. . . blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. John 20:29)

5. God teaches narcissism. Telling kids God has a plan for you gives them a sense of false security and selfishness.

(For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Jeremiah 29:11)

After I read the article, I said to myself, “what would her reaction be if something tragic happened to her children?” Would she sit silent? Would she curse God ~ who she doesn’t believe in ~ or would she pray? I’m guessing the latter ~ (Philippians 2:10-11)

No matter what happens or how we perceive things to be; God is good, just, merciful and in control. We’ll never fully understand why certain things happen. We just have to trust and believe in God. In reality, some people ~ no matter what ~ simply do no believe that God IS; while others have been hurt and/or experienced hypocrisy as it relates to the church. So, perhaps we should change our approach. We can start by praying and asking for wisdom in dealing with these individuals and more importantly always exercising love.
